Hi,

A neighbor's Seagate Baracuda 7900.9, 180 GB, drive with part number
ST31608125AS died.
He took it to Best Buy, and when the tech there hooked it up, it smoked. He
showed it to me
a while ago, and there is some mild carbon traces near where the power port
is connected.

The board, I don't know what you call it for sure, but it's screwed to the
bottom of the
drive and has the electronic control circuits on it, is held in place by 5
screws.

Is it possible to replace it, and if so can anyone tell me where I could get
one?
The goal is not to use the drive again, just to spin it up long enough to
get the
family photos off of it.

Thanks for any ideas,

Mike

Hi Mike,

It's been tried unsuccessfully by a person in this group in a similar
situation with a Seagate Seagate 320 GB SATA ST3320620AS drive.

Please read this:

From what I have read, newer drives have drive specific information
programmed into the electronics making a successful card swap unlikely.

Your best bet is to try a good data recovery service, though that can be
expensive ($500 - $1000 ballpark USD). It all depends on just how much
the pictures are worth to your neighbor.
