Hi Friends,

I am planning to buy a new comp - AMD 3200+ with Asus A8N-SLI
Premium motherboard. I would like to know which RAM from "Crusial"(1 GB
single slot) can give the best performance.Or is it recommented to buy 2 GB
RAM. Please let me know which is the apt Crucial RAM for this configuration.
I will be doing lot of video editing and graphics stuff. So I would like to
know what other things are required for the system. Also I would like to know
if there's something called L3 Cache. Thanking u all computer experts.

George Paul.

G.Skill PC 4400 LE with Samsung tccd chips
the absolute best in my opinion. It can to fast timings or it can do high
fsb/htt speeds. It is rated at the following:
2-2-2-5 at 200Mhz or
2.5-3-3-7 at 275Mhz

Surely 2x512 will be faster.

As the A8N-SLI can support dual-channel memory mode, you may as well go with
that. (That's 2 identical DIMMs, accessed in a way that can, at least in
principle, double the memory bandwidth.)

It may be worthwhile to get 2 GB, if you're serious about video editing. I'd
expect two 1 GB DIMMs to give the best performance. (Some mainboards for
Athlon64 CPUs switch to slower memory bandwidths if all 4 DIMM slots are
populated.)

For the 3200+, you'd want DDR400 (PC3200). The board supports ECC (error
correcting) memory, but most people don't bother with it.

You might consider the 2 GB (2 X 1 GB) pair:

(link may wrap)

or a 1GB pair (2 X 512 MB):

If you really want to play it safe, go to usa.asus.com and download the QVL
(qualified vendors list) for the A8N-SLI. That lists RAM that has been
tested with the board.

If it was my own system, I might be inclined to try:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231032

(2 X 1 GB pair, from G. Skill.) It is rated with a better (lower) latency
than the Crucial stuff, at 2/3 the price.

It's a slippery slope, though. Looking for high-performance memory might
lead you to considering more expensive CPUs, like the X2 (dual core) ones.
Multithreaded applications (like, say, video editing ones) can make good use
of those.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

This is the best 1 GB performance RAM you can buy. I run it in my system,
and stock - it is simply amazing. My brother turned me on to it as he runs
it in his work stations at work (large advertising firm - lots of video
editing!) The ASUS A8N SLI Premium will let you easily tap into its OCing
potential. It loves extra voltage and runs very cool - just the airflow
from my CPU cooler (ZALMAN CNPS9500) in my full tower is enough to keep
everything frosty. Check out the reviews as well as the forums at Geil's
website.
