Hi all

We're looking to get a new PC computer for doing big graphics, like
photoshop. We already have a Mac, now we need a new PC. We'd like a
top of the line unit, 132 mb video card, pentium 4 or equivalent, at
least 512 mg of RAM, big hard-drive or preferably two big drives, nice
soundcard.

What's your advice on some models I should take a look at? Some have
said Dell and some have said Sony.

Any suggestions?

thanks

This is a freeware newsgroup, it is about software. You want an advise for
hardware, hardware for a quite specific use to be exact.

I think you should rather ask in a newsgroup that is specialised in this
topic, like or I
think your will get more helpful answers there.

So you're saying that the people who frequent this newsgroup are dumb just because you are? Aren't we all also pc users
and surely there is someone who can answer the question? Asking a question on pc hardware among pc users, whether
freeware or otherwise, is not, in my opinion, OT.

No, he's saying your question is off-topic. Take it to the appropriate
group.

We are also all human beings who live in societies. Should we begin to
discuss the merits of Robert Merton's views on Sociology? How about
proper dieting? Since we all eat, it's on-topic, right? Why not
discuss the best mattresses? We all sleep, correct?

Sheesh.

Silly twoll.

Right. Why have different newsgroups?

I suppose you would wish to see a revamp of the entire usenet. Replace
thousands of groups en masse with one single group instead: pcuser.all

Come to think, there already exists 24hourhelpdesk, for those who want to
participate in a forum with a broad range of topic. The difference is that
it exists independently -- it's in no way whatsoever a call to alter the
nature of the newsgroups with more specifically-defined topics.

Btw, "pc users" have a habit of eating. And they are reputed to favor pizza
delivery. This since they don't have to wrench themselves from the monitor
for more than a minute. So, why not allocate the freeware newsgroup as the
place to settle those nagging questions --

1. white sauce or red?
2. pineapple, is it a legitimate topping?
3. dare do anchovies?

That's clearly the most logical approach. . .
1. white sauce or red?

3. dare do anchovies?

1. red
2. not really
3. always (more for me) :)

No, I said that this is a freeware newsgroup (where people know a lot about
freeware) and not a hardware newsgroup (where people know a lot about
hardware for image processing).

Or, to ask the other way around: Would you ask a lawyer what to do when you
are ill? I would ask a doctor. That does not mean that a lawyer is stupid,
that does just mean that a doctor knows more about curing illnesses than a
lawyer does.
Aren't we all also pc users and surely there is someone who can answer
the question?

Yes, there MIGHT be someone, but in the groups I suggested there WILL be
someone, probably even someone familiar with the topic who can thus be very
helpful. Also read Mike Andrade's posting on this topic - with your
definition, we could discuss almost everything in this newsgroup.

Build your own to the specs you need...

256mb Graphics...
1gb Ram
x2 120 GB Dual processor

yadder yadder yadder

Build your own...

Ditto on the "build your own" or rather, find a local shop or
free-lancer that you trust that will custom build a system to your
specs. You'll get more for your $$ IMO.

IMO the name brands such as DELL, etc don't get you much anymore. A
lot of the hardware is proprietary and the tech support is hard (for
me) to understand through the thick Hindi accent.

Build your own...

MUCH easier said than done. Take for instance the one I recently built.
Installed XP on slave drive, all OK; installed W2K on boot drive, can't
find the driver for the Simple Comm and Video Card even though the ones
that the Mboard and on board video card mfg gave me the "ones that work".
So Now I am stuck looking at 600dpi screen and letters the size of
Godzilla. Sucks. You may save some money but you had better have a lot of
time and expertise.

You need a 256MB video, 1G ram- high speed, P4, and (2)80g HDs. similar to
what I built for my son for online games...
