I am getting the "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close message".
Error signature is
AppName:ieplore.exe
ModVer: 6/0.2900.2180
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
Offset: 000e6c1b
ModName:mshtml.dll
I am running XP Home SP2 (upgraded from Win 98, not a fresh install). I am
running, and the only thing new added lately, is the Microsoft anti-Spyware
Beta.
I have read a number of posts indicating removing malware is a priority, is
MS anti-spyware sufficient to do that? Or could it be the problem?

Article 318153, written back in 2003, suggests reinstalling IE 6 as a method
of ensuring the correct mdhtml.dll module is installed. Is this avenue
advisable today? Is it required, or possible, to uninstall IE 6 before
reinstalling, if so how? Why is the IE 6 download at SP 1 rather than SP2?

Hi Jim :-)

There are various issues that can cause this kind of error, but, so that you
are truly aware; now that you have upgraded to XP, you *cannot* uninstall
IE. IE is a core part of the XP program, and while you can repair it, or
reinstall it, you it cannot be uninstalled, or serious damage will be caused
to your system.

Have you fully updated your machine yet? If not, go to the Windows update
and let it scan your machine and install any necessary critical updates.

Also...due to issues with Sun, Microsoft is not developing it's Java VM
anymore, save for patches due to security issues. Download info for the J2SE
JRE here:

Select the one for Windows Offline - Save to hard drive, close IE and then
install from the hard. drive.

Hope this helps.

Jan thanks. Perhaps some more background is in order. The upgrade to XP was
about 14 months ago. I have installed all the critical updates as they have
come out. The IE issue is more recent, seems to be somewhat intermittent
(when I posted earlier it was from another machine because iE would close
immediately each time) and seems to be getting worse = more frequent. I
rebooted, twice, and now can use the problem machine again for the moment.

One other "symptom": At the top of my screen it says "Microsoft Internet
Explorer provided by [ISP name]". This is an ISP I still have an account with
but is no longer my primary.

If I download IE 6 SP1 from the MS downloads site, will it reinstall
completely over the existing IE 6 (which says it is SP 2)? And will Windows
Update bring it back up to SP2?

I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm not sure why you are bringing up Java
VM?

Hi Jim :-)

Thank you for the update information. I don't think that the problem is
such that you need to reinstall or repair IE, I think it may have more to do
with the software from your previous IP, especially, as you say it is
intermittant. Try uninstalling any software from that provider that may
still be on your hard drive, double check all system and connection setups
and be sure there is not any residual reference to that IP and see if that
will correct the problem.

Hope this helps.
