Help ... I'm looking for settings for the software that came with a
Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III that will give me the best quality when
scanning film negatives. The manual that came with the unit doesn't
seem to be too easy for me to understand. I want to scan in my 35mm
negatives and then use Photoshop Elements or Epson Film Factory to
print them out. Print sizes up to 8x10 (8 1/2 x 11).

Also ... have read that VueScan is a good product. Does anyone have
experience with it and the Scan Dual III? Is it worth looking at and
buying?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Mike

You read wrong... ;o) It's full of bugs.

It's particularly buggy with Minolta scanners. Do check the archives,
there are tons of problems.

Or just stick around for a couple of days and you're bound to see
several complaints. The Minolta saga has been going on for months.
Is it worth looking at and buying?

That 's up to you to decide. I may be considered biased... ;o)

Looking is free, BTW. You can download a watermarked version and try
it out for yourself at www.hamrick.com.

I am happy with my SD III. Occasionally it unexpectedly goes off to
Scanner Heaven, requiring a scanner reboot, but otherwise it is a good,
solid performer. All it lacks to be almost-perfect is IR cleaning.

Vuescan is worth using on a SD III.

I have a Nikon LS-50 (and LS-30 before that) and they both
occasionally misbehave as well, although I never had to reboot. I
suppose it's the nature of the beast...

There is a constant stream of VueScan bugs being reported here but if
it works for you that's great. I was very dissatisfied when I looked
at it so I continue using NikonScan. It too has many small annoying
warts but that's nothing compared to VueScan bugs.
