I am using an OLD and CRAPPY laptop as a "MediaCenter" to play MP3 and radio
stations through my stereo. Since this laptop is so JUNKY I would like to
tear out everything that could slow it down. I have 1 application
installed, WinAmp.

I will need to be able to;
1) login and have users and permissions, although I *could* drop this if it
meant that I would save a lot of cycles
2) TCP/IP so that I can stream from the other PC that has all the files
3) access the internet and have a browser installed, so I guess I have 3
programs installed
4) Drivers for sounds cards and other required hardware.

So, where should I start? I figure there are people out there that must do
this kind of thing, some that even aspire to reduce an OS to as little as
possible... I need tips. I'm not a dummy on the ol' computer, but I'm not
super into it either, so I'm afraid to just go in and start killing
services, etc without knowing what the trickle down could be.

Any help and tips appreciated!

Thanks,
Steve

Can you even buy that anymore? I'm down to put it on there, but I don't
have it.

Thanks though, it's a good idea

You can find 98, but it's not in plentiful supply. XP will just tax your
computer unnnecessarily, and if you start stripping it down you risk
breaking it. I wouldn't waste an XP license on an 'old and crappy' laptop.
But your laptop should work just fine as jukebox.
