Need a totally READ ONLY database

I need to distribute an ACCESS 97 database on CD-Rom. I need to make it
totally read-only and need to make sure that no one can change the
permissions back.
All info found retains admin privileges and depends on changes in
Wrkgadm.exe which just will not work in this situation.

Thanks!

The only way you can guarantee it's read-only is to apply Access Security
(and even that's not 100% reliable, as it is possible to crack the
security).

If you only want it to be read-only, there shouldn't be any need to fuss
with wrkgadm.exe: simply remove the Admin id from the Admins group, and put
it in a group that only has read access. Then, regardless what MDW file they
use when connecting, they won't be able to do anything. Make sure you have
an MDW that has an ID for you in case you need to make changes on it later.

I think you also nee to check the default permissions allowed to the 'Users'
group of which Admin is also a member - which can't be revoked.

It would be useful to have more detail about:-
(and even that's not 100% reliable, as it is possible to crack the
security).

Does this demand some hack that crunches through possible Pid's or are ther
'more convenient' methods?!

You're right. I thought that limiting the permissions to the "Users" group
was obvious, but I should have been explicit.

As to the cracking, do a Google search, both on the web for 3rd parties
offering to do it for you, and in the archives of this group for some
discussions that have gone on about it.

Well - the web search seems to suggest that BetsyB had best keep her data
written on bits of paper with indelible ink and 'securely' stored in a tin
box with a strong lock. [Surrounded by a 10 metre no pen zone!]

And distribute it to her users as photocopies of requested pages!

Perhaps it would be more sophisticated to keep the data on a computer but
lock it in a kevlar box - being careful not to make a hash of it all by
loosing the key.
