Need a serial port on a USB-only laptop

I have a serial device that I want to runon my new laptop. Are these
converter devices that look to be nothing more than an connector
adapter and a driver disk all I need?

I've heard rumors that they don't always work correctly.

Advice?

Yes, you might not even need the driver disk, installed one on my new XP PC
and it found a driver it's self.
I've heard rumors that they don't always work correctly.

I've never had a problem.
