What's a very good book to not only learn about Access,
but to learn about the fundamentals of creating databases
in general?

Is the O'Reiley book the best?

If you can find it, Rebecca Riordan's "Designing Relational Database
Systems" (Microsoft Press, ISBN 0-7356-0500-9)

For some bizarre reason, Microsoft's let it go out of print, but we keep
hoping they'll reprint it.

Hi anonymous!
I also am interested in learning how to use Access as well
as the fundamentals of managing databases (before I even
ask the question of how to create databases)so how far
along are you on this? Any ideas or suggestions?

Yes, I'm looking for a good book too, but not at too high a level, if you
know what I mean, high eneough to get me started and be able to create a
fair simple application as needed.
TIA, Colin D.

Mastering AccessXXX Development, Alison Balter, SAMS

Thorough and complete for fundamentals. Many examples. Easy read!

I recommend it highly!

Dan (and others), the book I would recommend is *Mastering Access 2002
Premium Edition* by Alan Simpson and Celeste Robinson (Sybex), available on
Amazon.com (where you can browse the Table of Contents). Simpson is a true
database guru and a superb author whose hallmark is clarity and
thoroughness. The book's "Access in an Evening" chapter is the perfect jump
start. The "Understanding Databases" chapter is a brief but useful overview
of database design. The remaining chapters take you through all the features
of Access and will likely answer any questions you have for a long time.
Make your way through this book and you will be ready to tackle more
advanced books like Alison Balter's.
