I have 2 computers hooked to a router but not networked, one Win98
and the other WinME. I can play multiplayer games but was unable to
network the computers so I could transfer files. Can I do this with
Kazaa or some similar program?

_Perhaps_ the unstable develpment edition of
TightVNC with builtin file transfer can do it -
it is easy to try - use ip-numbers to connect to the other PC -
If no ip-numbers are available I do not think it will work.
Obtain the ip number by executing IPCONFIG in a command prompt.

You could, but I would suggest you make another stab at networking the
two computers. Specifically, make sure you have enabled File Sharing on
both. And make sure your router and firewall allow communication between
the two machine's IP's. I don't claim any particular expertise -- I had
to fight and fumble and stumble my way through before finally getting my
home network (W98se/W2K/XPpro -- adding MD9.2 comes next) set up. Took
me three evenings of fussin' and cussin'. I found the site linked below
to be invaluable:

Yea, I agree. It's usually not hard at all if you follow a few simple but
critical rules.

Don't forget to look at the computer names and the workgroup names. I think
98 used to name their workgroup "GROUP" or "WORKGROUP" by default, and ME
named it "MSHOME" or similar. They must be named exactly the same or will
refuse to talk.

If all else fails, take a look at BitWise. Man, it transfers files slick as
a cat's you-know-what, and fast too. :)

Also make dure that both PC's are in the same Workgroup

Start> Settings> Control Panel > Network> Identification tab

I wasn't going to get into that, but since you brought it up...

I tried several times to set up a network. I used the networking
wizard, following the directions to a T, as far as I could tell. I
tried several different networking guides I found online, with no
success. I also have a cousin who is fairly knowledgeable about
networking come over and check all my settings. He was unable to tell
why my computers weren't communicating. I tried getting help in a
couple different usenet groups, also unsuccessfully. I know all about
the workgroup name, computer name, file and print sharing, etc. In all
I probably spent half a day or more trying to get set up. I'm just not
willing to spend any more time trying.

Now, do you have any suggestions about file sharing/transferring
programs?

Thanks for trying to help though, I do appreciate it.

FTP server and client. I do this myself on my home network with one PC I
can't get to cooperate. I run a FTP server on my desktop whenever I want
t oget files to/from the laptop.
