Need a new refillable cart printer

My 10 year old HP 870cse printer went to printer heaven. I could refill the
carts cheaply and easy.
I'm in search of a cheap printer that can be refilled without a bunch of
hacking. I know many (all?) new printers have a chip in the cart.

I also need a basic software driver, not a bunch of glop the disk installs
on the PC. Most basic drivers files are under 2MB. My dads new HP printer
(with scanner) installs 150MB of crap and uses up memory.

Any recommendations?
Thanks

So what I'm going to tell you about is the Epson C88, with or without a +.
The printer can be had for $80 or less. I've been refilling cartridges with
its brethren (C84,C86, and C88) for a year and a half both easily and
cheaply. I'm using spongeless cartridges, dyebase ink and a chip resetter,
all from MIS (www.inksupply.com). The cartridges are see-through, about $22,
and the chips can be either pulled off the cartridges that come with the
printer or bought from MIS. I'm running this method on a dozen printers at
school with no hassle. For good photo and everyday printing it works. The
only thing that I yearn for is wishing that the spongeless cartridges would
be made in "high capacity" for the black.

You can put crap ink in all of the new printers today and get the same
lousy results so it does not make any difference what brand of printer
you get since the ink really determines the brand.

This is not one of Epson's better printers.  It certainly is worth of crap ink.  The R series of Epson printers is much better and the Canon IP4300 is even better than that.

So what you want is a printer that has a good driver supplied with windows?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

No, he has no idea what he wants. His mum, wants him to get out of her
basement and get a life as the stench is driving her nuts!
He has not had a printer that works for at least 3 yrs now and the odds
of getting one grow dimmer by the day.
He is mentally "challenged" and thinks he works for a company called
"canon or canyon' or some such sounding company.
He's unemployable and unsociable. He thinks this ng is his home. You may
humor him but never, ever take his advice.
