Hello all,

Just wondering what the best way is to protect both my desktop and laptop. Only the laptop connects wirelessly thru a D-link
wireless router(the desktop is 'wired' to the wireless router). I've been using McAfee virusscan and the free version of zone alarm
on the desktop. Nothing at all on the laptop as its just now being used more and more on the www. My subscription ran out on
McAfee so I was just curious. I've never had any issues with what I've been using except sometimes I need to shutdown ZoneAlarm
after I've been away from the pc for awhile then come back and try to get on the net. For some reason it wouldn't let me. Thank
you all for any advice.....

I think that ZA will go into some kind of lockout/protection mode
blocking all traffic when the machine goes idle like that for long
periods of time and you come back to the machine and try to use it.
Instead of rebooting, you need to find out how to take ZA out of that
mode.

I have seen that mentioned in some other NG's your problem.

If the router has logging, then you should enable the logging and use
something like Wallwatcher (free) to watch inbound and outbound traffic
to/from the router as someone can join your network and use it. They
could also be all over your shares as well.

If you're using an NT based O/S, then you should take note on using
Authenticated User Group on shares and not the Everyone Group.

You didn't mention it but also be sure that you have security enabled on
your router. WEP at the very least with 128 bit encryption or WPA (better
yet WPA2) if your router and wireless NIC support it.

The router has nothing to do with you not being able to access the Internet
with you problem. It's ZA.

Well, that sounds like my home setup - couple of machines
wired, one wireless, to an ADSL router/modem.

I don't use anything on the actual machines at all.

The router has a good-enough firewall, NATs the PCs, and
they're only used by myself and my wife, and both of us know
what kind of mail not to open and what kind of webpage not to
visit. Safe Hex is always the best.
