Need a hotkey to shut down the system in one felt swoop!

Hi folks,

I have a client who is technically challanged and wants a
hot key to shut down the XP Home computer. In other
words, he thinks it's too much trouble to click on Start,
Turn Off the Computer, and then Turn Off...... He seems
to think it's a conspiracy or something.....

Oh... but it is!!!

Anywho... I have had a few clients that were physically
handicapped. This is what I did for them it should work
just as well for your client.

To add a shortcut to the desktop for either "Logoff or
Shutdown":

Right click on the desktop and click create shortcut >
Click on Browse > Find C:\Windows\System32 and open this
folder. > Scroll down until you locate "Logoff.exe" click
Ok. The name should appear the same (You could actually
delete the ".exe" out since it has no meaning to the
customer.

Do the same for "Shutdown": Right click on desktop >
Create shortcut > Click Browse > Locate
C:\Windows\System32 > Locate "Shutdown.exe" within this
folder click ok. Rename to Shutdown.

The shortcuts are added to the desktop. You could also
change the icon appearance to match that from the start
menu. Right click on one of the icons Select "Properties"
Click on the "Shortcut" Tab > at the bottom of the

screen click on the button that says "Change Icon" an
error will pop up and state that this file does not have
any icons associated with it, just ignore this and click
ok. Now, a selection of icons will be available. Select
the Icon that you want to correspond for Logoff and
Shutdown. Logoff is the Yellow Square with the key in the
middle and Shutdown is the red square with the close/open
circuit.

If you want to associate a shortcut key with these icons:
Right click on the icon select "Properties" >
Click "Shortcut" tab > in the middle of this dialog there
should be a command line for "Shortcut key" enter
whatever... F12 or F11 or a combination ctrl+alt+s or
ctrl+alt+l

If they just want to logoff for the time being you can
have them select the "Windows Key" and "L" at the same
time. This will log off there profile.

A lot of work... for a simple task :/

I had a technically challenged friend one time who wanted his pc to boot
straight to Windows, bypassing all of the "junk" that appeared at startup..
I suggested that after having pushed the button on the case that he shut his
eyes and count to 100.. it worked.. sometimes, the simplest of things work
sooooooooo well.. lol..

One button solution:
Almost every keyboard made in the last 5 years has a "sleep" button.
If you do not want your pc to go into standby (sleep) mode or
hibernate.............. go to your display properties/screensaver/
click "power" then the "advanced" tab.
Where it says "When I press the sleep button on my computer:"
choose "shut down".

Another reply to your post suggests just turning the pc off by the
power button............. I would not recomend this....... your pc
needs to save settings and shut down PROPERLY if you want it to stay
problem free.
