Always trying to get good prints at a good price.
My favorites have been at the Costco store near me or www.winkflash.com
Plenty of sites available as you all know.
In a recent post at www.dpreview.com somebody recommended www.mpix.com
One of their production facility is in Pittsburgh and I live just north of
Pittsburgh so I decided to give it a try. Uploaded the pictures three days
ago and the prints arrived in the mail this morning, obviously being close
to them helped in the delivery time with the USPS.
I had some of these pictures printed at Costco before (all 5 x 7) and some
at winkflash. It was easy to compare with the prints I received from mpix
(also done at 5 x 7).
At mpix you can select different printing papers. I selected Kodak metallic
paper and photos mounted on foam board.
The bottom line is this:
Black is really deep black
White is really white
Colors will pop right out of the print, green is green, not yellow green and
red is red, not orange red.
It takes one second to see the difference between a print from mpix and one
from Costco or winkflash (these two are just about the same).
A word of caution. One picture had just a touch of red eye, barely
noticeable in the Costco print. The red really came out in the mpix print.
So make sure you edit out red eye before sending a print there.
Not the place to send 200 pictures to get 6 x 4 prints when you get back
from a vacation. But when you have this "special photo" and you want a great
print, the little extra money they ask is worth it.
Having the picture on foam board is great. No need to purchase a frame.
Picture is ready to hang. adding a piece of Velcro to the back.
Before sending the pictures, I used Digital Image Pro 2006 to add a mat
around each picture. So, the bottom line is I have pictures on a foam board,
with a mat around, ready to hang and no need to purchase anything else. The
print cost more, but there is nothing to buy after if it is mounted on foam
board and you made a mat or a frame for it with your software.
Sorry for this long post, but I know we like to hang prints. So use the
advice as you wish and if you have something else about good printing places
share it with us.

Yes, but watch for read eyes.
Make sure you correct (remove) any hint of red eye if you see them on your
screen. They will pop right out when you order prints from mpix.
When I looked at the prints from mpix, I realy was taken away by how good
the color prints were.
On second look, I noticed the red eye in one of the picture. Barely
noticeable on my screen or the Costco print. But the red, in a very small
portion of the eye, is quite visible in the mpix print.
