Need a GOOD USB Hub

I seem to have chronic problems with USB. MY Dell has 4 ports in back,
2 in front. Not enough with KB, Mouse, Scanner, Blue Tooth, Printer,
IPOD cable, external HD, plus several Thumbdrives all needing ports.
I have had a couple of hubs, both externally powered, but I'm plagued
with unidentified hardware. First hub just quit working, latest is
intermittent. Have to unplug, replug a lot.
Is it likely that the system just can't deal with so many? I'm tired
of buying chesp hubs that don't keep working. Any suggestions
welcomed.

Partially the OS I think. Something to do with assigning USB device IDs.

I have no-name cheap 4 port hub been using for 2-4 yrs. I noticed that
sometimes the mouse stopped now and then. I switched it the onboard port
and its fine. I tend to disconnect devices I don't use regularly like
MP3 player, joystick, turn off the printer when not needed.
