Need a few details on the Outlook and Communicator relationship

If I remove Outlook, will Communicator function?

In the need to slim down a special purpose VPC, I need to slim down a
company standard PC build. I'm looking at removing the Office component
including Outlook. However, I do want Communicator for chats and desktop
sharing.
