A few details would help, like whether the DOS program will be used in
real DOS or with Windows, or what you mean by "hp compatible".
"hp compatible" probably means your DOS program is creating PCL output.
anyway. Go to HP's web site, choose Black And White Laser Printers,
click the Compare checkmark on the ones that seem to fit in your price
range, then click Compare Selected. The Connectivity tab shows what
print languages are supported by each printer. Printers that support
PCL 5e will probably work with your application. Avoid "host-based"
printers, which are bottom end printers anyway.
DOS doesn't support USB, and a lot of current lower-end printers only
have a USB interface. If you run the DOS program in real DOS, get a
printer with a parallel port.
If you run the DOS program in Windows, you may be able to use a
USB-connected printer. Make sure you can return the printer if it won't
work with your program.
