I have a problem with Vista Ultimate. It does not recognize my NEC 3500 DVD
writer as such. It says it is a cdrom player. How do I fix this?

Try updating the firmware, but read the instructions fully and follow them
precisely:

hi,
i had very same problem with my vista 64. my mainboard is abit ab9 with
jmicron sata/eide controller and the problem was caused by wrong drivers for
the controller - it was recognized as scsi device. i have removed old driver
and it detected itself as standard pci ide controller - and the dvd/rw drive
(also nec) started working as it should be.
any problems give me a shout then i will try to do it once again and will
give you step by step guide. dont even bother updating the dvd firmware as
it will not fix anything and you can break your drive as it is not detected
properly.
