It works! Unlike many I've evaluated.

Thanks Felicia.

A while back some idiot was convinced that a woman he knew was at my
phone number (lived with me). Many, many, many calls - day and night. .
.. abuse etc. etc. This feature would have been handy:

With Call Alert!, you can block telemarketers (or any other unwelcome
callers) easily: simply select whole or any part of a telephone number,
and add it to the "black list". Call Alert! will recognize such callers,
and disconnect them automatically after just one ring. When an unwanted
call arrives, the phone is simply disconnected.
</q>

There is also a great program called Phone Filter, not sure about the url,
shouldn't be too hard to find. It can automatically disconnect calls from
predefined numbers or play recorded messages.

It would be fun to have Eliza (or his descendents)respond to the phone and
carry on a conversation....I wonder what the telemarketers would do ;-)

I had a look at it - on the site it claims that the prog can pass the
caller ID number as a parameter to another prog - but nowhere in the
program's options could I find such a feature.

They hold on!
I use a shareware prog at the moment, and set it up to intercept calls
from companies claiming I've won a major prize in a competition.
It answers the call and immediately says 'Hello...sorry..would you
just hold the line a mo..be right back'....and then it just leaves
them hanging there until they, not to put too fine a point on it, piss
off.

Most give it about 45 seconds..but I had one hanging there for almost
five minutes!
Shallow victory, I know, but it's comforting to find technology to
fight technology...

On the popup window, select Contacts. You can add a number (to the
phonebook) or block it at this point. If you then select Phonebook, and
click Contact/Edit you can further refine its properties or delete it.

Ah right, so you have to add a number before it will allow you to send
the ID out.
That's a shame, it looked to be an otherwise handy app.

It's not clear to me what you're objecting to here. Surely you wouldn't want
all calls, especially repeat calls, added to the Phonebook . This gives you
the option to decide which numbers you may want to act on.

On the other hand a listing of all calls received is given in calllog.txt -
a text file in the directory.

It works! Unlike many I've evaluated.

As a matter of interest what modem do you have? I have tried some modem
caller-id programs before with a couple of modems I have but could not get
it to work. Apparently only some modems will work with caller-id?

What I need the app to do is pass the caller ID out to the command
line as a parameter - regardless of whether that number is in the
phone book or not, or without adding it to one This allows me to use
my own database, bypassing the caller ID's internal one...otherwise I
just end up having to run two databases.
The shareware app I use does this, but it's a bit bloated and not that
fast - and I have to run the output through a couple of other programs
to format it first.

Yep, not all modems have this capability - and not all of those modems
may work with the caller ID in your country.

In the UK I've found the Pace range ( now obsolete ) to work very
well.

I'm using an external modem - Creative Modem Blaster V.92 with caller id
capability and TAPI.
In evaluating a host of software programs, I've found that many are indeed
modem dependent, but most will work if you have TAPI.

I just DL'ed and installed this program
http://www.beiley.com/acallerid/index.html and am successfully using it with
my BCM V92 56K data modem. Lots of interesting features.

Steve, you can go to
http://www.planet-source-code.com/v...lngWId=1&B1=Quick+Search&optSort=Alphabetical

Careful, this definately wrapped.

Or just go to http://www.planet-source-code.com/
and search for caller ID in the VB section. You'll see how to do this
programmatically. I don't know if you have VB, but I'm sure I could put
something together for you. I guess the first place to start would be to
verify that the code actually works. As I do not have a modem or access
to a phone line on this machine, I'd have to test this all at home.
Should be doable though.

You had your telephone line held up for one to five minutes? Hmmm, I hope
you don't get many of these kinds of calls.

This is a very nice program - but it's not freeware. It's disabled after 30
days and I think it costs $35 or thereabouts.

Perhaps so, but I can't find anywhere on the site that says it's disabled
after 30 days, although registration is strongly encouraged. Even if it's
disabled after a month I believe I'll consider spending the 20 bucks if the
program runs as promised. I like the e-mail notification, publish, voice
prompt and block call options that are usually not found on caller ID
freeware.

One does get the impression that registration is optional and nowhere does
it specify that you must pay eventually. I just loved it and was surprised
when it ceased after 30 days and requested payment. If I were purchasing a
caller id program, I would buy this one. It was clearly the best of all the
programs I looked at - freeware or shareware. Really nice features - but my
need for this sort of thing is not that great. A simple freeware program
(that works!) will do for me.

Not to worry...the Batphone's on another line....
