Hi

I am running WinXP with SP1.
My m/c is AMD K6-500 with 256 MB RAM.

I recently did a windows update and selected the entire updates available
for download and installation (almost 28 nos). All the updates installed
successfully except for MS Java update.
I am also running Norton Antivirus 2003. I do a live update every 2 - 3 days
and keep the SW upto date.

I have done both the Windows Update and the NAV Liveupdate about 15 days
back and thereafer i am facing the following problem

1) Starting of Outlook takes a little bit more time.
2) The scannnig of outgoing mails sent through Outlook takes hell lot of
time and at times the scanning goes to 90% CPU utilisation.

I am facing the above problem only after i have done either the LIve Update
or the Windows UPdate. I am not sure which I did first.

The scanning was running perfectly in background without much of CPU
overload before the Updates.

Can somebody tell me what the problem might be.

Thanx in advance

In all probability it's a coincidence to correlate this to the Windows
updates from Microsoft.

It could be that Norton adntivirus is now doing a better job as a result
of getting the updates. You can turn off scanning of outgoing mail.
Frankly, it's probably not required to do that anyway as it's a bit
redundant.

For more advice about Norton Anti-Virus, check with their FAQ and
support pages on the web.

Your CPU is ok, but on the lower end of the scale for contemporary
performance, and you have the minimimum amount of memory (256). Adding
another chunk of 256 mb memory will probably do wonders to performance.
Ensure you have free disk space available, and that you defrag the disk
periodically.

first, thanks for replying

I need the NAV to scan outoing mails because i have a Workgroup Mail on my
system in ht office. All incoming and outgoing mails are requried to be
scanned because I am not sure of how other users are keeping their system
updated.

It is also a point to note that whatever file is creating the problem is the
one which has come along with a update which was released during the last 25
days and i more believe it to be one of the NAV update file only. I am not
yet able to identify the particular file creating the delay. If you come
across any info on this further please do let me know.

Simha,

Since you are required to do this, I assume there are some written rules
for this and that you can talk to these people who wrote these rules.
Ask them to help you with your problem.

The reasons you state for why you are required to scan outgoing mails is
not compelling and frankly I don't think they make logical sense. The
real reason to scan outgoing mail is to ensure the outgoing mail do not
have viruses. Assuming that you don't create viruses, and assuming that
you scan incoming mail and have proper firewall protection the odds of
your machine becoming infected and a source of viruses is nill.
Therefore what purpose is served in scanning outgoing viruses. The only
2 reasons I can think, in your case, to scan outgoing viruses is because
1) it is required, 2) so that you can put a disclaimer at the bottom
of your email which says something to the affect "this email has been
scanned".

Your problem is with NAV. You need to get help from Norton on this.

I have no problem wiht my setup of NAV (and I updated just this morning
for most recent updates). Again ... speak with your computer support
people in your office on this. They make you do this. They need to
provide you tools fit for purpose.

I think for the time being it is better that I disable scanning of outgoing
mails.
I have another problem problem regarding networking for which i will get
back to you
