I would like to hear what people's opinions are or experiences have been
with these 2 apps.

Would you like to be killed by knife or by gun shot?

With regard to NAV....I used Norton Utilities for several years (incl Virus
program), but haven't used it for over 3 years. My remembrance with Norton
was BLOAT, and it got so deep in my system, I had a hell of a time getting
rid of it or uninstalling it. Unless they've made some drastic changes, I
will never use Norton again. Just IMHO. If I had only the two choices you
mention, I would go with McAfee AV. I'm honeymooning F-Secure Internet
Security 2004 right now and really like it. I also like NOD32. Kasperksy I
haven't tried, but have heard it is pretty great. Take a look around is
what I recommend and see what seems to work for you. (I won't even TRY NAV
because of the above experience) YMMV.

Apologies for tagging onto your post.

I've had fair experience with both. Bear in mind I'm using NAV2000, however
I have seen NAV03 on clients' systems and it doesn't seem to have changed. I
have to agree, it is bloated.

The main advantage that I saw with NAV was that it performed a scan of
incoming e-mails, however the flaw in that logic (to me) was that people
would grow complacent and be overly reliant on NAV to scan for incoming
e-mails. The problem is that both NAV and McAfee is reliant on dat files,
and if the file in question is dated, then you're more or less screwed
(pardon ma Francais). This was fine in the past but now it's just a sad game
of catch up and from what I'm seeing, it's just something that some of the
bigger players are going to lose, especially if they continue to be
reactionary in their approach.
Having said that, it's not bad. I'm still using it.

With McAfee, the main flaw I had with them was that they were web based,
however they seem to have changed a fair bit now, and I have to say I'm
fairly happy with the product. For over all protection, they're competitive
advantage is that they're brand names and they've got a good, strong support
networks. Their weaknesses though, is that they've got smaller operators out
there with more efficient products, and like me, they try harder.

To answer your question though, my preference is with McAfee. It's less
bloated and does the job quite efficiently, critical if your system is low
on resources.

Have a great one,

Ka.

Nod32...The best.....

Kaspersky
I did a google search and found Kaspersky order page but I could find NO
"contact us" there. If they don't want to be contacted, I'll stay away.

Thought they may offer a competitive discount for a switching customer from
Norton.

I think they have a lot of contact info in different countries as a
matter of fact... I've emailed them twice and gotten answers from them..
but you have to do what your comfortable with. As they say on my job..
"ya gatta do what cha gatta do!"

All I know is my own experience with Nortons was sore and shitty! I
tried eicar (test file) and nortons beep and blatted like a freakin'
champ. But I noticed wierdnesses going on. I then did a netstat and saw
an established connection from "Hackarmy" and although I'm not the
brightest bulb in the batch, I figured that I had some kind of virus in
there at that point! heh. Anyhow, Kaspersky found 2 virii and a trojan
(and another on a diff. puter)... I might add that when I was researching
as to what to use in Norton's stead I went on a few "hacker" sites and
saw that they laughed at Norton's and almost all used Kaspersky... kind
of telling, don't you think? I used to use McAfee and that too let me
down.

A good friend emailed me back telling me the file I had mailed him was
infected.. McAfee missed it. I'm totally happy with Kaspersky and have it
on 4 computers now. I get on the newsgroups to download and it's save my
butt a few times now.. but.. "cha gatta do what cha gatta do!" nuff
said.. peace..

Hey! I forgot to add.. after I uninstalled Norton's it was deeper in my
system than most virii! Was a real pain digging out all the crap in the
registry.. later.

Same experience I had Mr. Buckaroo. Never again. F-Secure is my flavor of
the day ;)

I can elaborate on that but first let me say they have offered me a 50%
discount. Right now I'm using a freebee called AntiVir Guard that I think
may work out. If not, I'll take them up on their offer. Re: discount, hey,
you never know unless you ask!!

We can offer you a 50% discount to switch to KAV. Please send us
details about your configuration, and I will reply with a price quote.

Norton!!! @#$%^&* It refused to remove via XP's built in program. It said
the liveupdate was running. Maybe it was but it didn't work. Anyway, I
traced down the exe program that was running (lucomserver.exe) and tried
delete it. Access denied. Went to DOS. Access denied. To shorten a long
story and after many verbal descriptions of the heritage of the writers, I
rebooted into DOS safe mode. I haven't used DOS for so long that it took a
while to figure out how to erase it but I did erase it. Went back to
windows and through normal removal, dumped it. I'll do a registry search
later.

Glenn :-)
