I have been going to Symantec to get my updates to make sure I am current
with the newest viruses. After opening and letting this download work, do I
file these downloaded files or delete them. Or should I just wait for the
automatic updates and not worry?

Once you've downloaded and executed the virus definition it's done its thing
and the file can be deleted. I for one do the same as you and go there daily
and get the intelligent update def. It is updated daily excluding weekends.
I do this versus the Live Update simply because that is only updated maybe
twice or 3 times a week. They say they will do the Live Update more
frequently if they feel there is a significant threat. I say better safe
than sorry.

If you use Intelligent Updater to get new AV definitions and choose
the "open" option, the files are installed without any further effort
on your part, except to click OK. You don't have to do anything more
with the files. Do not delete them! Just let them do their job. If you
want to archive new definitions to update more than one computer,
choose the "save" option and download onto a removable medium (CD or
Zip). When that's done, click on the program icon on the removable
medium and update your NAV software. Again, just let the definition
files do their job. LiveUpdate is seldom more frequent that every 7
days. If you are able to update NAV more often via Intelligent
Updater, go for it!

The way to stay safe is to not let your system become compromised in the
first place. A daily updated AV utility should be the last layer of security
you rely on. It's like having a gun in the house to deal with intruders. It
might make you feel a lot better knowing it's there, but you don't want to
rely on just that. At that point, it's chaos.

I can't believe it. I actually learned something today! All this time I was
saving them to disk then executing them then deleting them. I like your way
much better! Thanks

I couldn't reply to your response to my initial posting. Google was
unable to retrieve it. I misunderstood the original question, Mea
maxima culpa! It was not clear whether the BooBoo wa saving AV
definitions to disk or opening the file on the Symantec website. Of
course saved filed are deleted once they have been executed. There's
not much point in hanging on to them. As there is so little, if
anything, you have to learn about AV protection, please tell me
whether there is anything wrong with choosing the "open" rather than
"save" option when updating NAV on one system.

Sorry about my earlier answer. I did not realise you were talking
about saving AV definitions to disk or opening the file on the
Symantec website. Of course saved filed can be deleted as soon they
have been executed on your system(s).

Saving to disk, CD, etc, makes sense if you're updating several
systems. I only open a NAV definitions file when I'm updating one
system.

Could some of you please reply to this. I am a newbie and I know not to
open email from unknown sources and not give out my email address but what
else is there? Thanks in advance.

Have a look at this site as it has a lot of hints for security and privacy:

Also keeping your operating system updated with the latest fixes.
