Hello to all!

I have been using Norton AntiVirus 2002 since, well, 2002 with no problems
up to about a week or so ago.
The new problem is that the Auto-Protect disables itself.

If I try to enable it via Norton Antivirus interface I get this error:

"An error has occurred in the script on this page
Line 887
Char 5
Error Unspecified error
Code 0
URL res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVUI.dll/navstats.htm"

I have searched the newsgroups for other that may have had this problem.
All responses suggest, deleting NAV, MANUALLY eliminateing all traces, even
from the registry, reinstalling, etc.

What happens is, If I go though all the trouble of eliminating NAV2002
myself, and reinstalling, Auto-Protect can be enabled.
But it only lasts for an hour or so. Eventually, auto-protect disables
itself and CAN NOT BE TURNED ON.

This really seems to be a very new problem. One that looks (base on what I
can search out) like it may not be fixable.

Would purchasing NAV2005 make any difference at all???
I've been using NAV2002 forever with no problems except for recently.

And not knowing if this is related to the Live-Update problems, I've read
about fixes for that too in the hopes it would somehow help the problem with
Auto-Protect disabling itself perminantly.

No luck.

Just for kicks:
I'm running WXP PRO SP2. I use ZoneAlarm and not WXP PRO's firewall. I've
turned off WXP PRO's monitoring of anti-virus software.
I allways turn of all auto-updating features of any program I use because I
like to control when things get updated.

Are others having this problem?

::sigh:: do I have to switch to McAfee? I'd rather not, but NAV2002 CAN NOT
enable auto-protect and updating it is completely FUBAR'd.

Well, any response/thoughts/input/flaming is appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
-Steven

For the good health of your computer you should avoid anything Norton and
McAfee. There's a zillion things that go wrong with Norton routinely so your
problem isn't likely new and it isn't fixed in 2005. There are remarks about
Norton in M$ KB and also on the MVPs site. McAfee has a similar reputation.
I highly recommend System Suite at www.v-com.com which has a Trend Micro AV
as well as other well known apps and utilities. Not buggy, not a hog, very
efficient.
