Native mode? How can you tell?

Go into ADUC, right-click on your domain object and select "Properties."
The General tab will list your domain functional level, as well as your
forest functional level if you're running 2003.

Thanks - my AD root, 2003 server says that I'm in mixed mode. I read that
native mode is now called "Windows 2000 native" in a 2003 AD environment? I
know about NT4 domain controllers not participating in a native environment,
but what of 2000 servers? I'm guessing that they're excluded too (from
being DCs)?

Since I'm building this AD domain from the ground up and then migrating my
NT4 domain members to it, I'd really like to have native mode from the start
and not have to worry about "throwing that switch" in the future. I will
have nothing but 2000 and 2003 servers when I'm finished. What problems can
you see with me upgrading to native right now?

Thanks for your help!
Mark

P.S. In Windows 2000, there was a "Change Mode" button, but I don't see it
in 2003 Server. Did that change or am I not granted authorization for some
reason and that's why I don't see it?

Whoa! I have two choices:

Windows 2000 native and Windows Server 2003...

Ummm...

Too many choices now - any recommendations? There will be no NT4 domain
controllers in this new AD domain, but there's a tiny chance of a child
domain with Server 2000 (although I want to eliminate that possibility
shortly). I may just "go for it" right now and switch to Windows Server
2003.

Egad...

I guess right now, while I'm building/testing/migrating is a good time
though...

Thanks,
Mark

I suppose my posts in this thread now amount to "thinking aloud", but I've
just switched my root and my child both to Windows 2000 Native. There were
loud explosions and flames, but nothing major...

Actually, I'm poking around now and nothing seems to be any different...

Whew...

Much worse than smoke and flames is the ominous silence....

I agree - you can almost be deafened by the hum of the light fixtures... I
know that feeling :-(
