Hi

I am thinking of getting a NAS 200GB/300GB - but i want to make it act
as a server with Windows 2000 server or 2003 on it?

Therefore when using logon they can get authorisation from the NAS
[with win 2000 server on it] and logon with their files.

Would this work?

I don't won't to run a proper PC all the time but rather run one of
these Nas as they are lot quieter, cheaper and smaller!

What do you think - can you do it? would work? has anybody tried this?

Thanks

Kiran

Personally, I think it would be a waist of money to get a 'device' to act as
a file server for that little an amount of file store. You also have
conflicting requirements. If you want a server, then get one.

I am appalled at some 'NAS' devices offered. One I saw the other day cost
well over the price of a computer, came with 1 disc drive, had a capacity of
4 disc drives, and was limited to only 4 drives of no more than 250GB each
(stated clearly). It added *nothing* to what the drives could do other than
RAID 0 or 1. For the price of the box alone, you could get 4 x 250GB drives,
1 x RAID controller card, plug them into an existing server and be up and
running with heaps of change and a meal out.

I would see benefit if the device supported say 8 or 16 drives, did not have
artificially low limits, could also house a TBU, and was a turn key file
Sharing (with locking) device, but no, not a hope.

2 cents.
