Having some trouble with the narration thing. I purchased a microphone and adapter, and plugged it into the back of my computer into the red/pink hole that has a microphone picture next to it (assume that is right one). Checked the setup wizard as instructed, but it didn't appear to work. The wizard doesn't tell you how to tell if it is working or not, just provides a line to read. Proceeded to record sound over powerpoint slides anyways. At set up I clicked OK to embed and did not check box to link. The little icon shows up, but there is no sound when I do playback. I checked the connections for the speakers and that is not the trouble

I found the help online to be less than intuative

Can you provide more explicit instructions?

Kathy,

I'd start right back at the basics. Forget powerpoint for a moment. You need
to prove that the microphone is working on your computer 1st.

(Windows 98 instructions..others may vary slightly)

Do you see a "loudspeaker" icon (bottom right) ? on your computer?
Double click it with your left mouse button.

Click the "options" menu
Choose "properties"
Then tick the "recording" tick box
In the list below...make sure "microphone" is ticked.
Click OK

On the window that appears "labelled Record control"
Tick the box marked "select" underneath the column labelled "microphone".

Then slide the slider up all the way to the max.

Then Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment/Multimedia

There should be a little program called "sound recorder"

Click the "little red circle" marked record

Talk into the microphone.

If it appears not to record. Then double check the microphone is physically
plugged into the correct socket on your PC. Don't confuse it with the
line-in socket.

I would open the sound recorder that is in the accessories folder. Accessories, entertainment, sound recorder. When you click the red button on the recorder and talk you should see inflection in the line, if no inflection you are probably connected to the wrong connection on the sound card. Try another connection. Usually the middle, or left connection will be the mic connection.
