Naming Slides for Relative Linking in Excel

I have a master Excel spreadsheet with links to specific slides within a
PowerPoint presentation to explain the Excel. However, as I add slides in the
PowerPoint, the links in Excel now refer to the wrong slides. Is there a way
to name slides in PowerPoint (like named ranges in Excel) so that PowerPoint
will take care of relating the names to the correct slides and the Excel
links will always point to the correct slides?

I can't find how to copy the actual link that shows when I hover over the
cell, but here's an example:
"file:///path\filename.ppt - 332 - Clink once to follow. Click and hold
to select this cell."
Word has bookmarks, and Excel has named ranges, how can I use relative
naming in PowerPoint?

Thanks for your help,

Thanks so much, Steve! You put down lots of knowledge and experience in these
lines, and it will take me a while to digest it. I really appreciate the tip,
I'm sure I'll develop several VBA routines to exploit this functionality,
since it is part of my job to maintain this Excel - PowerPoint pairing and
the links between them. Thanks again!
