For some reason whenever I try to do a "save as" and type a name for a new
worksheet it will only accept the first letter of the file name. If I try to
name it alph.xls it will come up a.xls. any ideas. I have Office 97 on a
Windows XP machine. I never had this problem before. Thanks

There have been a few posts describing the same problem. I searched google and
found this:

The last post in the thread suggested an answer. (I think it has something to
do with WindowsXP). I don't think I've ever seen this option in Win98 or
WinNT.)

I think I have the solution to the problem:

Excel was running in Windows 95 compatibility mode. When I disabled
compatibility mode the file name problem went away.

That fixed it. Thank you very much.

Thanks for posting back.

I don't recall seeing a response that it worked. (Well, I don't remember one!)
