Names don't appear with email addresses - WHY?

OUTLOOK 2002, WIN XP ----------------
All of a sudden, when addressing email by clicking "To" and then choosing
the name from the adress book, only the address appears in the email and
doesn't show the name of the person as well. Before setting up OL2002 (from
Office XP Pro) to run on this new system, I could address email as above and
it would show in the email as "John Doe ([email protected])." On this new
computer, the address simply displays as (e-mail address removed). How do I get
the name to display along with the address?

Thanks,

Depends on the version in which the Contact was originally created. This is
normal for some versions, and is of no consequence.
You can change the display as field manually for each Contact if you really
need to.

Okay, I give. We've never had this problem before with any contact, and all
contacts were created with this same OL2002 version from the same Office XP
Pro disk. Now that I've installed Office/OL2002 on a new computer, the
names don't show with the email addresses. So, to be clear, here's the
question: How do we get the name to appear with the address after we click
"To" and choose an address for the email? We want the final address on the
email to show as "John Doe ([email protected])," not simply
(e-mail address removed).

The only way is to go in and change each Display As field manually.

Thanks for the reply, but...Honestly?...every single email address in the
list of 5,000 addresses, now have to be fixed one at a time, manually? What
could have happened in this installation of OL2002 to remove names from
being displayed with email addresses, when installing this very same version
of OL2002 on earlier occasions never removed the names from being displayed
with email addresses?

Well for starters, importing Contacts could do it.
It's possible that someone has written code to do this, but it's such an
inconsequential matter that I doubt anyone has spent much time on it. Never
hurts to ask in a programming group.
Just curious, what is it that is so important about the To: field in the
local message that requires you to make this change?

Thanks for the reply. Having the name of the person displayed helps in a
couple of ways: The overall reason is that there are many times when I need
to glance at the email addresses contained in an email. The problem is that
very often an email address is too cryptic to adequately convey who it
belongs to. Hence, have the name displayed along with the address is very
useful.

Having the names removed from being displayed with the email address has
never happened before. There must be a reason it happened now, and it seems
very illogical that the only remedy is a manual fix of 5,000+ addresses.
