After downloading a program called TreeWalk from ntcanuck.com (having DNS
problems with ISP), Zone Alarm caught a program called named.exe trying to
access the net. The IP address was for NASA! Does Win 2000 have an auto
program that adjusts the system clock using named.exe, and ties into the
NASA clock?
I had tried the Windows 9x version of Treewalk; well, actually, it is not
Treewalk, per se, but an earlier DNS server written by the same author(s). I
have removed it, for now, until I get around to really understanding DNS and
the Internet. According to my firewall rules, the program name was
"NAMED95.EXE".
My guess is, "named.exe" is the heart of Treewalk, and TW was trying to pull
some DNS information to cache locally. You need to verify this, of course,
because malware can attempt to mimic trusted application names. But, if your
"named.exe" is, indeed, part of Treewalk, you really need to let it have
unrestricted access to the Internet because it is trying to pull the DNS
zones for your local computer to use in DNS look ups. Restrictions probably
will make some parts of the Internet disappear from your view.
