I'm in need of a printer for the following application but I can't
figure out what it would be called, or find a manufacturer that offers
something like it. Still, the concept is really simple so I gotta
believe something like this exists.

I have event tickets that are pre-printed and on these tickets is a 1"
square box. When the ticket is redeemed at our facility, we want to
stamp a letter into this box so we can group certain numbers of people
together. For example, the first 100 people get assigned to group 'A'
so we print that letter on their tickets, and so on.

The printer needs to be controllable from a PC via usb or serial so our
software can determine which letter should be printed. Ideally it would
be great if the printer worked like an electronic stapler. That is,
slide the ticket in and it stamps down. What I'm describing is almost
like an electronic timeclock that companies use but that's not close
enough.

Any ideas?

Zebra, Star, Epson all do a variety of printers which can do what you want.

Iv'e seen (and repaired) Zebra ticket printers in Theatre which feed
perforated card tickets and print the entire ticket.

I've seen and repaired ID card printers which print to plastic cards for
membership details including printing the photo photo and laminating it
all in one go.

Have a look around at http://www.zebra.com/ for some ideas.

It seems like you need a ticket printer. When I googled "ticket printer" I
got allot of hits.

The problem seems to be that all these printers work with blank bulk stock.
You are going to have to see if any of these can work with single feed.

Does it have to print on the ticket or can you just print the info on a new
ticket and just hand them that?

Also how many tickets and how many events, all these printers look very
expensive.

One other option is to print out small labels and then affix them to the
ticket.
