Possibly, if you have modified them quite a bit from default - particulry if
you are requiring digitally signed commnications for both server/client and
maybe if you have additional restrictions for anonymous access set to no
access without explicit anonymous connections, but I would first check that
file and print sharing and Microsoft Client for networks is installed and
enabled on each computer, that netbios over tcp/ip is enabled, and that any
personal firewalls [including the built in one in XP] is either disabled or
configured to allow lan traffic. However do not disable any firewall unles
you have other firewall protection from the internet such as a cable/dsl
router. -- Steve

Browsing is a NetBIOS function. If you don't have NetBIOS install you won't
be able to browse.

Here is a detailed article that should help you understand how browsing
works:

According to your email it appears that on this Windows 2000 system you are not usind Netbios over TCP/IP. Network browsing uses Netbios, if Netbios
over TCP/IP is set to disabled then network browsing will fail and you will see the name resolution problem you are describing.

I am including some links to articles on network browsing that explain how this works.
