Hi Everyone,

I have put in place a VPN server and a VPN Client.

When I connect to the VPN Server from the VPN Client I don't have a problem.
I appear as a client on the server and no errors are logged anywhere.
From Explorer MYNETWORK name come up with the list of Machines attached to
the network.

The problem I have is that when I select a machine I get the message

\\ServerName is not accessible
The network path was not found

The only machine I can connect to are MYMAILSERVER and MYVPNSERVER

If I want to connect to any other machines I need to add their IP addresses
in the host table.

Can anyone help me on this problem?

From what I understand; from the client side apart from the connection they
shouldn't be anything else to do. I am right?

I suspect it is something to do with DNS but don't know how to verify that.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tanks you for any suggestion.

In your VPN connection, what DNS server have you defined?
It should be the AD domain's DNS server, not an ISP's DNS.

Hi Kevin,

On the VPN server:
the Intranet Connection hasn't got any DNS defined
the Internet Connection has got the Active Directory domain's DNS Server
set up

On the VPN Client:
Not Applicable.

Is TCP/IP not installed on the VPN connection on the Networking tab?
Click on the properties of the VPN connection on the VPN client, then select
the Networking tab.

TCP/IP is installed on the VPN client
Under the Networking tab I have:

Obtain an IP address automatically
(I have a pool of addresses set up on the VPN Server)
&
Obtain DNS Server automatically

So when the VPN is connected does the ipconfig /all have the DNS server for
the domain you are connected to?
If not you can manually put the DNS server in.

Hi Kevin,

--So when the VPN is connected does the ipconfig /all have the DNS server

I ran ipconfig /all first with my inital settings
The DNS reference was empty

I added our DNS IP Address and then ran ipconfig /all
The DNS IP Address cames up and miracle! All my access problems seems to
work.

Brillant, it seems to all work (I will need to do more tests)

Now i have got another question for you:

I have been trough tonnes of documentation and browsed quite a lot over the
last few days to sort this problem out and never came over any simple answer
or even suggestion.

Why do I need to add the DNS ref, I thaught the client when connecting to
the Server was sort of picking up the DNS reference and should work.

Is it a bug or is there possibly something else on our network that needs to
be looked at?

Thank very much

I'm glad to have been able to help you, I know this is the DNS group and
sometimes it is hard to guess which group to post in. I have seen this
question before so I had an idea what I was looking for. I've been posting
in the group for over two years missing only a few days in two years, I've
seen a lot come through here and have covered just about every problem that
can be even remotely blamed on DNS. Since the release of Win2k and Active
Directory just about everything can be pointed to DNS problems.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you very much for your help and the explanations in your last mail.

You made my day!

Good night from England for now.

Ta!
