One of my contacts has a new e-mail address. I changed her contact name and
address but when I address the new mail, her old address and contact name
stay the same. Also, the spouse of a friend died and the contact list will
not let me eliminate his name even though it appears to be eliminated in the
address book. I have deleted the names and started over but still the old
one appears.

You did not provide sufficient information.
Post your Outlook version.
State how you are entering names when the deleted Contact appears.
Any Contact you delete from your Contacts Folder will also be deleted from
your Outlook Address Book, so something here does not fit.

Microsoft Outlook 2003
I clicked on Tools the Address Book. I opened the address book and changed
the e-mail address. It appears that the address is changed until I address
my next e-mail to that person. The old name and address automatically
fill-in. I then went to Tools, Address Book and deleted the name by
highlighting it and hitting the Delete 'x'. Entered a new name and address.
When checking the Address Book and Contact list they both look correct but
when addressing the new e-mail, the old comes up.

You don't ever use the Address Book for data entry or manipulation.
You do that in the Contacts Folder.
That's where the data resides.

OK...... I went into the contacts folder which reflects my changed address
and display name. I cannot find the old name and address but as soon as I
start addressing a new e-mail, the old pops up with no evidence of the
changed address and name. It must have something to do with where the auto
fill-in gets its data.

I just noticed that when the old address pops up it has the < > brackets
around the address but when I am able to pull up the new address, it doesn't
have the brackets. Does that shed any light on where the problem is?

Thanks for trying to help

You still have not answered my original question about how you are selecting
the email address.
You said you were using the Address Book.
Clearly you are not.
Most likely you are using the autocompletion cache, not the address book.
Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by highlighting
the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your arrow key to
migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before you tab out of
the field. If your autocomplete list contains only a single entry, use the
directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289975

To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q287623
