Name changing

Two things someone may be able to offer help on:

1). I'd like to upgrade one of my "beefier" machines in a domain of about
15 users on AD.
Essentially I'll be replacing the machine, but I want to use the same name.
Would this be a problem, and am I likely to come unstuck somewhere.

2). Similarly, I'd like to continue using the old machine under a different
guise. Can I just change the name (bearing in mind the new machine will
have acquired the old name), or will this also cause problems. Should I
just find completely new names?

Do you have a third machine that you can promote to a DC during this
operation? If so, promote the third machine and let it replicate. Demote the
current AD machine to a member server and change the name. Promote it to a
DC and let it replicate. Install the new machine with the old machine name.
But before installing the new machine I would clean up the AD for any
references to the first DC. See below for links to articles about this. The
last thing is to demote the temp DC. If you already have a second DC in
place you don't need the third temp machine.
If you only have one DC you need to export the Accounts from AD into a file
(or you might be able to use a backup) and then import the accounts when the
new machine is online.

Personally I would just install the new machine with a different name, it
will make life much easier.
