i keep getting the sound alert and icon to notify me of new mail, however
when i check there isn't any.

Anything in the Junk mail folder?
 
Message rules would be the next thing to look thru. Anything that is deleted
will still show the icon.
 
no, i have imported settings from my oe6.

if you choose to delete from server then you wouldn't get a new mail
notification. if they were landing in a folder such as deleted items then
the folder title would be highlighted in bold.

none of these things are happening. it notifies me of new mail and there
isn't any.
 
Blocked Senders is another one.

Yeah, all the anti-spam and anti-virus checking should be turned off.
