Mythical unread mails

Outlook is indicating that there are 2 unread mails even though the
unread mail folder is empty. If new mail arrives, then the figure 2
increases to 3. When I read the new mail and close the box, the
figure reverts to 2.

This is very irritating!

Any ideas how to cure this?

I should have said I am using Outlook 2007
