2301 is used by the Compaq Insight management
application. It is often running by default on a Compaq
server install.

Thanks for the replies people!

As far as I know, we don't have any Compaq equiptment... but still, I shall
investigate further ;-)

I also saw a packet coming from one of our servers to my PC... source is UPD
1986, destination is UPD 1182... anyone know what that means?

(No, really... I will stop asking... honest ;-)

sounds like you need to have this url handy:

Anyone have any idea what protocol uses UDP broadcasts on port 2301?

Thanks.

You might want to try SysInternals TCP View (free) or Foundstone Tools
Vision (also free) to see what process is using what port. Of course,
these only show what is inuse at the time you run them so they won't
record those fly-by connects between poll intervals.

Thanks. The packet sniffer software I'm using automatically identifies
virtually all port numbers... these are the only handful it couldn't
identify.

Quoting from the source you just have me:

"# 1181-1182 Unassigned"
"licensedaemon 1986/udp cisco license management"

Ooo... interesting... what the heck...?

(Presumably the port number at my machine is random. But why is our server
sending me Cisco license management packets? We don't even have any Cisco
software on our server... or my PC... How bizare, how bizare!)

Well... unless something *else* uses that same port number... you never know
;-)

Thanks.
