Mystery partition

It's a long story but the short version is I got new hard drives
and copied the old ones to the new ones. I copied them one partition
at a time using Partition Magic.

The "mystery" partition is the 3rd partition on disk #2 (a new Western
Digital 60 gig.).
PM shows this partition as - FAT32 with no errors.
WinXP shows it as "Local drive" - RAW and needing to be formatted.
In DOS on this partition, the 'dir' command results in "Invalid media type".

How do I get XP & DOS to see this partition the way Partition Magic does ?
It had/has data on it.

Microsoft operating systems require that the first two bytes of a FAT
partition is a jump instruction, although this is not part of the
partition data structure.

The problem always seems related to Partition Magic usage.

Version and operating system version should not be cut from Findpart
output.

This means Partition Magic is no good ?
So what program are we supposed to be using to create, size & resize
partitions, make them active
or not for dual boots and copy them to new HDs and all the other things we
sometimes need to do?

I did not realize that. Apologies. I cut 'n pasted the output from the
following:
-----------
Findpart, version 4.37 - for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.
Copyright Svend Olaf Mikkelsen, 2003.

Searches for partitions type 01, 04, 06, 07, 0B, 0C, 0E, 82, 83,
plus Fdisk F6 and Lilo sectors. Information based on bootsectors
is marked B. If the disk is larger than supported by BIOS, the
supported part of the disk is examined. Disks are numbered from 1.

OS: Windows 5.1 All

I've always used Partition Magic to create/resize/delete my partitions. I
always create blank ones, and use Norton Ghost's PartitionToPartition option
to copy the data from the "old" partition to the "new" partition (because
it's faster than Partition Magic, well it was, not sure if it still is). I
boot using a Win98 DOS boot disk and run Ghost and Partition Magic from
floppies.

You must have the main XP partition marked as active.

Do you need some of the about 224 MB of data in the partition you
cannot access?

Possible solutions would be to edit the boot sector, or copy the data
to another partition using a FAT32 recovery tool.

If you do not need the data, you can delete and recreate the partition
using XP Disk Management.

Reliable partitioning tools do not exist as far as I know. One
solution is to have backup, and figure out if certain conditions make
the risk of problems larger.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I seem to have to learn the hard way. I took the data loss and reformatted
the drive.
I have now setup a good DVD backup program in case this happens again.
