My recently bought external hard drive isn't doing what it should be doing. I've scouted around the web and hit a brick wall, so I turn to someone here.

I've formatted and partitioned the thing several times, but it still doesn't show up in My Computer. Although it will appear if I access it by right clicking and selecting explore when I'm in Disk Management. If I format it then when in My Computer, it jumps up closer to the other drives, instead of loitering around the bottom of the folder list. The icon never puts in an appearence. It shows up under All Disk Drives. But should I try to seek it when clicking on the My Computer icon, it's gone, like it was never there in the first place.

It did all work perfectly once, before I did something (that I now realise was) very stupid. I turned the drive off, whilst the pc was still on.

I'm running XP SP 2. No other device was ever asigned to the drive letter that the external hard drive is currently using.
I am mostly a dunce, I know.

Do a system restore to the time before, you turned the PC off by mistake?

I turned the external hard drive off, whilst the pc was still on. I'll try the system restore though, I had been thinking about doing it.

System restore achieved nothing.

Update:
I've plugged the drive into my brother's pc and it works fine. No problems whatsoever. I am greatly displeased.

Did you turn the drive off while the system was writing to the drive..

If so this action can completely mangle the platter reader...Best thing to do is try and get hold of another drive and see if that gets recognised and works ok..if it does you have almost certainly wrecked your hard disk.....

Solved!

I re-installed Windows, and now everything works fine.

Drive doesn't seem to be at fault, more like the crappy pc I have.
