I have a new mesh (or is it Mess?) computer,

It is now switching itself off for no apparent reason - I have to restart the computer. This mostly happens when running games or video applications.

I am running XP home
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
• x86 Family 15 Model 31 Stepping 0

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT
• Video RAM: 128 MB

1Gb of RAM

MESH have suggested that I enter the BIOS and do:

advanced --> chipset--> AGP and disable teh Fast Writes (amonsgt other things)

However, when I go into bios--> advanced there is no "Chipset" control.

It is getting tiresome and naturally I am somewhat worried about it,

Anybody got any ideas

Many thansk

okay ive just read ur post
can u explain in more detail the problem

when u say switch off does that mean :
1. it all goes dead and theres no power and u have to turn it back on?
2. or do u mean the computer will RESTART?

this will help us understand more

Download, install and run Everest and tell us what your system is.

With a motherboard name and number we can ascertain what the BIOS is and better advise.

The same can be said for the other key components such as Video/sound cards.

To me, at the moment, it looks like an overheating problem and your system is shutting down to protect itself. Check the BIOS.

;)

I have downloaded and run Everest. Each time my computer freezes. I find this a little unlikely.

There have been heaps of problems today - freezing, error 5006 - partitions, drive D is corrupted/unreadable, freezing on boot up (both blank screen and very dim screen)

Going to call MESH tomorrow. Thanks for your reply though

id say its def a hardware problem

possibly the psu

thats power supply unit should u not know.

good luck

First... maybe psu. running those apps drawing more power crashing things out... but i doubt it.

Second, Heat... You run a very nice gfx card. Running game or video apps for too long may be kickin the heat way up. Also. on heat, when a cpu goes out, it extremly over heats, hot enough to burn you...

Third, a mobo issue, if your comp uses a cheaper manufactuerer then it may be the transistors... same thing happens.

Forth, Software issue... Virus is biggest clue, look for worms and nasties with trojans. theres other possible solutions but since it already went back, your safe. least you know for next time.

Cheers!

I'm gonna go with PSD99, shutting down completly is def hardware, a virus or too much soyware causes restarts. But shuttting down completely is usually a cooling issue, I know your computer has got a lot of ram and a nice video card but man as a gamer you need to be consience of heating and the risks in over clocking and stuff. Most likely I'd say your overheating the processor and your computer is shutting down. If it takes a while before it will start back up than it is definatley the processor. Try unseating and reseating your RAM and then see if thier are any updates for your BIOS settings. If no Updates then try this out, go into DEVICE manager start/right click my computer/properties/hardware tab/device manager. Go into system devices and uninstall the mother board RESOURCES, there may be 1-6 of them, If its WIN XP then uninstall them, (do not touch the MB DRIVERS!!) restart the computer and enter into the BIOS during restart. When in BIOS restore the default settings, usally f5 or f9 , select yes or ok, and then hit f10 and yes or ok. If it still shuts down, ???????? then power supply, proccesor and system board need to be checked (sadly yes I know, basically the whole computer)
