Mysterious split pane facility

I've just noticed an odd function within outlook 2003.
If you create a new message, at the very top of the vertical scroll bar is a
little grey rectangle. If you hover your mouse over this box you can then
drag it down to horizontally split the window pane. Both panes remain
synchronised while typing.

What on earth is the purpose of this?

Rodders.

It's an artifact of Word being the editor. Some people might find it useful for composing long, complex messages.
