Mysterious scsi device?

I couldn't get Partition Magic to run in WindowsXP Pro. In Device Manager
under Disk drives, I found a SCSI Disk Device listed that I didn't have.
When I viewed "Devices by Connection", I found it was linked to the Promise
Fast Trak controller.

The disk device can be uninstalled if I uninstall the Promise contoller.
But, when I boot up XP it finds the hardware and the Unknown device
reappears.

The controller is built into my motherboard. I don't use it and I
disabled it in bios, but XP still finds the hardware.
Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks, Tom

The observed behavior is typical of most Promise/Highpoint equip'd MB
running XP with APIC support. Just install the Promise drivers and the
'unknown device' will no longer be unknown.
Partition Magic on the other hand doesn't want to work for safety reasons
and should do just fine after the drivers are loaded.

David, the Promise Fast Trak's driver is installed. The controller shows
as working, and is listed under "SCSI and Raid controllers". The unknown
"SCSI Device" is listed under "Disk Drives". I don't have a disk driver
for it because it doesn't exist. If I try to install a generic disk
driver, XP warns that it isn't for this device and says not to install it.

If I don't disable the device in "Device Manager", Partition Magic won't
boot. It declares an error because it can't find any boot or partition
info for the non existent drive.
