Hello:
I am using IE 6, with Windows 98 (second edition). For
some reason, my internet explorer has blocked my access to
the entire domain of McMaster University (all webpages
ending in mcmaster.ca). Otherwise, my IE browser works
perfectly. I can visit any conceivable webpage other than
the ones in the mcmaster.ca domain. Using other
computers, I know that the mcmaster.ca domain is working
perfectly, and there are no problems there. I also have
up-to-date antivirus software, and I am certain I am
(currently) virus-free.

I contacted the computer services people at the university
and they insist the problem must be either with my
internet service provider, or my internet explorer. There
is no problem with my ISP (and the proof of that is, I can
get to the websites in question using my other computer).

My question: is there some way that IE can block access to
a specific website (or domain of websites), and if so, how
can I change these settings? I don't see anything in the
tools or options windows that relates to my problems.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong with my browser and
how to fix the problem?

Thanks for your help,

Jeremy

Jeremy,
dns www.mcmaster.ca
Canonical name: wwwmac.cis.mcmaster.ca
Aliases: www.mcmaster.ca
Addresses: 130.113.64.65

can you "ping www.mcmaster.ca" (no quotes) from a Dos box?
can you access via IP address: http://130.113.64.65

If yes, indicates a corrupt cache file or a bad entry in your HOSTS file
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#Win98

You can use a simple batch file to rename the HOSTS file "on-the-fly".

Hello:
I can't ping any of the mcmaster addresses from DOS, nor
can I reach it by typing in the numerical IP address. Does
this mean I still have a bad entry in my hosts file? Or
is the problem something deeper?

This might sound over simplistic, but have you
checked 'Tools'-'Internet Options'-Security Tab-Restricted
Sites to see if the site is listed there?

Sometimes I miss the basics looking for the cause.

Good Luck!
