Mysterious network problem.

I can't connect to my POP3 mail from my computer.
At first I thought that something is wrong with the server, but calling
the company verified that everything works.
On another computer, I can reach the server just fine, but from my
computer, nada.
The problem seems to be that I just can't reach the server, this is very
annoying because I can't reach my email, and I *know* that it works.
I shut-down the firewall, check my hosts file, called my ISP, and
nothing works.
Anything else *does* work, that is what is so annoying.
Please help me!

My network setup goes like this:
1> Local network connection - physical network card
2> Connection to cable modem - physical network card
3> The dialer to the cable modem - "dialup"

Even though you say that you've turned off your firewall, you
probably still have some firewall active somewhere. I tried
your telnet command and was immediately successful.
Open up the PPP adapter status panel, then check if some
200 bytes are sent out when you run "telnet mail.ayende.com 110".
You could try some other POP3 server too, e.g.
"telnet mail.keypoint.com.au 110".

This doesn't work either.
I tried from another computer in my network (that uses mine as a
gateway, and both my own and yours are working (nor on port: 25) ).
This computer is connected directly to the Internet, so there aren't any
other firewalls.
What is the PPP Adapter status panel?
My connection is L2TP IPSec VPN, not PPP

My environment is different - I connect through an ADSL router.
Try a different port, by running this command:

telnet hawthorn.hopto.org 5901

If successful then you should get this response: RFB 003.003.

I got the correct response.
 
As a part of troubleshooting, I would disable VPN temporarily and fix DNS
settings, sof-sof.
 
I tried some of your nslookups and tracert, etc.

NS lookup on your mail destinaton:
s:\>nslookup mail.ayende.com

NS lookup on your IP address reports the following:

As you can see by your posted results, your DNS settings are also problematic.
You should enable DNS recursion and forwarding on your DNS servers to properly
locate DNS names outside your LAN.

work.
