Mysterious free disk space appearing

Yesterday I had less than 1 GB free on my laptop hard drive (with 4 GB
of stuff in the Recycle Bin). The laptop became unresponsive while
running some programs, and I had to switch it off and back on again at
the power. Everything seemed fine. Later I noticed that there was 3 GB
free on the hard drive, with 3.5 GB in the Recycle Bin.

Do you know where this extra space might have come from? I didn't
personally delete anything in the meantime more than a few MBs in size.
The laptop runs Windows XP Home, SP2.

Max size of recycle bin was reached, so it deleted some ??. Rt\click
properties on recycle
bin to see what it`s set at.
