Mysterious folders that contain Microsoft files

I have several users that are getting these files on their workstations and I have no idea what they are
An example of the file name is 599e40582e5e53895da6 and 71d787430b86041c896
These files contain an executable supposedly from Microsoft. and has a eula.txt as well
Some of the files contained in the update folder are as follows
update.ex
spcustom.dl
kb828749.ca
update.in
eula.tx
update.ve
We use volume licensing for all Windows 2000 software
Any ideas where these are coming from

File names or directory names? If they're directory names, those are
directories that updates were copied/un-cabbed into and weren't cleaned up.

A couple of possible explanations off the top of my head:
1. An update failed to install correctly.
2. Something was holding open handles to the files and dirs when update
tried to delete them. (Antivirus scanner, maybe?)

Probably, they come from installing this fix:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-049
Buffer Overrun in the Workstation Service Could Allow Code Execution
(828749)

I would have expected the fix to clean out and delete any temporary folders
used during the installation, but it seems as this hasn't happened in your
case.
