Mysterious file disappears

I have noticed a few times that a file appears in my start bar recently used
program list (along with Word, Solitaire, etc.). It is listed as 'Admirals
Command Registration' and it's shortcut properties are as follows:

Name: Admirals Command Registration
Target type: Application
Target Location: System32
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe C:\ADCMDWIN\ADCREG.TXT

Strangely, the C:\ADCMDWIN directory does not exist and I can not find the
ADCREG.TXT file anywhere on the computer.

Please, can anyone tell me what this file is, why it seems to open
automatically (such that it appears in the recent program list) and why the
file and directory are not there when I look for them (I have 'view hidden
files and folders' on, so it is not simply hidden).

Thank you.

It would seem that someone using your computer downloaded this game.
Here's a link to their site:

Thanks for the reply Malke,

It is possible that this game was on my computer a long time ago but it
isn't now, and I am certain that no-one put it there in the days around when
the recently used programs entry appeared there, and it would not have been
there for at least 6 months.
Is it possible that there is a remenant of the program somewhere that is
creating the above mentioned directory/file, using it or something else and
deleting it?
I know a .txt file is harmless, but it bothers me when I can't explain what
is happening.
I have looked at the website you pointed to, and even installed the game
(and then removed it) but the file ADCREG.TXT was not included. This may just
be because a newer version has been published.
If you are not aware of any particular proble associated with this file then
I will discuss it with the software publisher and see if they do own the file.

Thank you again,
Matthew

Matthew, it's possible that there is something left in the Registry from
this game that calls up its registration program. Use the System
Configuration Utility to see what is scheduled to start with Windows:

Go to Start>Run and type (without quotes) "msconfig" [enter]. This
brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and
OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do
you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Malke, thanks but there was nothing in the registry.
I think I have an idea though, thinking back it seems to show up in the
recent program list when I use notepad. Maybe there is something in notepad
that is stuck on this as the last file used... I have renamed the shortcut
and repointed it to the notepad file properly (although I doubt it will stop
it coming back later I'll try). I can't find a notepad.ini file that may
contain some errant information, is there one?
BTW, I did find the file on a CD, it was related to an older version of the
game you mentioned, but hasn't been on my computer for many months.

Anyway, I'm sure it is harmless and if I can't fix notepad's brain then I
will just ignore it.

Yes, good point.
I'll contact them to let them know the problem.
Thanks for the help and the patience.

Cheers,
