my wireless network connection keeps getting killed

I use my AT&T wireless phone to "tether" to get on the Internet, and I
can get connected, but get dropped within 5 minutes.

After grueling hours of troubleshooting by swapping out the phone and
the SIM card, I have come to conclude that something on my laptop
keeps killing my connection.

This help page (http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/faq.php) suggests
various possibilities which are just to broad (see under "Connection
established successfully but drops after 1 or 2 minutes for no
reason."), but it does seem possible that something on my laptop is
killing it, and I wish there was a better way to hunt down the
culprit.

Is there a trace utility I can use to monitor my connection, and to
look for the killer (or killers to quote the immortal OJ Simpson)?

Look for the power options or management on your Wireless NIC in device
manager and uncheck Let the computer Turn OFF this device for power saving
Option.
What your Anti-Virus and firewall settings?.
HTH.

How are you connecting the |cell| phone to the laptop? If you are
connecting it directly with a USb cable, you might have a defective
USB port or incompatible USB chipset. Experiences a similar problem
with my WiFi USB adapters. Turned out my PC is incompatible with ALi
based USB ports. I've replaced these by a Nec based controller and
alls well.
