I am using a Compaq presario V6307 laptop and a mobile phone with GPRS
compatible sony ericson Z550i. I was successful in configuring the fax on
this laptop and am able to open the fax console and the fax wizard. Fax on
sending comes with a message stating "There is no dial tone and hence cannot
proceed". I looked into the modem configuration and found two modems one was
data modem for z550 and other is ordinary modem for z550. I can configure
only one modem at a time. I did configure both modems one at a time but with
both attempts futile. what shall I do inorder to receive a dial tone on my
fax modem so that I could send and recieve fax? Any suggestions or
alterantives is welcome and appreciated.

About the only thing I can suggest is to go into modem properties and
uncheck the "Wait for dial tone before dialing" checkbox. This may or may
not help:

27. Can I use my "Fax capable" Cell phone; Fax Equipped ISDN adapter; VoIP
(Broadband) Telephone service with XP Fax?

Hello! Hal,
i tried your manoevure but this did not work. I can currently send fax
to another computer but cannot receive one. Whenever a fax is sent to my
computer it answers to the call and synchronize breifly but states an error
occured and stops. I tried to reduce the port speed to 9600kb but this too
does not have any effect whatsoever.I have checked on manual receive and on
automatic. On automatic when the phone rings, the fax monitor does not come
up nor there are any sounds detected by the modem, it is usually taken up
manual clicking to recive fax. Once this is done, the above procedure takes
place and eventually an error occur without accepting the fax. Any
suggestions for the rectification or what shall I do next?

Regards,

Alexander.

Other than trying a third party Fax application, I don't know what to tell
you. XP Fax doesn't get along well with a good many modems and there's
really no rhyme or reason for it. Since Microsoft has removed the Fax
module from Vista Home editions, many users have replaced it with Snappy Fax
(http://www.snappyfax.com); you might try it, or some other third party Fax
application to see if its more forgiving.
